About demon names

What makes a name sound demonic

Many famous demon names come from real sources: Beelzebub is from the Hebrew Ba'al Zebub, "lord of flies", and Asmodeus from the Avestan aeshma-daeva, "demon of wrath". They share heavy consonants (z, th, x), the Semitic Bal- or Bel- ("lord") and long, rolling endings. Our roots follow those patterns without copying real religious figures.

Demon or devil?

In D&D, demons (the chaotic Abyss) and devils (the lawful Nine Hells) are different. Demon names suit raw, chaotic hunger; give devils a formal title and rank, such as "Duke of Chains", because the Hells are a strict hierarchy.

Warlock patrons

A fiend patron needs a name a warlock can invoke at the table. Two or three syllables plus a title works: the player says the title in public and saves the true name for dramatic moments.

Demon name questions

What is a good demon name?

Something with a hard or hissing ending and an air of age: Vorzul, Razrirax, Malgoth. Add a title for menace.

Are these real demon names?

No. They are generated from roots that sound like traditional demonology, so they won't clash with real religious figures or famous published villains.

Can I use these for a warlock patron?

Yes. Generate a batch, star a few, and press Origin for a pronunciation and a story hook.

Are there female demon names?

Demon names here aren't gendered. Titles such as "Mother of Wounds" give a feminine reading when you want one.
