About elf names

How elven names sound

Elven names lean on liquid consonants (l, r, n), open vowels and soft endings such as -riel, -wen, -las and -ion. Hard stops like k and g are rare. Tolkien built his Sindarin and Quenya the same way, and most tabletop settings follow that lead.

Child names and adult names

In the Forgotten Realms, elves use a child name until they come of age at around 100, then choose an adult name. A player can use that as a hook: your character may still answer to a childhood name among family.

Family names

Elven family names often translate into Common as nature images: Amakiir ("gem flower"), Galanodel ("moon whisper"). Our generator mixes elvish-sounding family names with translated ones like Moonbrook or Silverglade, so you can pick the register that fits your table.

What is a good elf name?

A good elf name is easy to say aloud at the table, two to four syllables, and ends softly. Names like Caelia Starbower or Ilithor Galanlo work because they sound elvish but are not hard to spell.

Are these elven names from Tolkien?

No. They are generated from NameRealm's own root lists, inspired by the sound of Sindarin but not copied from it, so they are safe to use in your own stories and games.

Can I get female or male elf names only?

Yes. Choose Feminine or Masculine before generating. Any mixes both.

Do the meanings come from a real language?
